Welcome to Thursdays with Cyn where I share my personal tips and tricks to hopefully motivate and inspire you to take just one small step towards your OWN e-commerce entrepreneurial journey.
The title of today’s topic is: The Spinning Wheel of Desire
Let’s start by saying we all have desires and needs.
Desires can be: I want (new car, new house, quit my 9-5, etc.)
Needs are necessary for basic survival (food, water, shelter)
Typically we place a higher priority on NEEDS versus desires due to their importance level, but you CAN move them up on the priority list therefore becoming a need.
Many desires go unrealized - perhaps forever.
Why? Possibly because no effort is put forth to make it happen.
Think about this common example: weight loss.
I have needed to lose weight for 3 years... but I kept adding pounds. Little here, little there...
I would lie to myself that it wasn’t that bad.
I would start diets / stop diets / start over again … and basically never made any progress at all or it was very short-lived.
Until… I received the diagnosis of pre-diabetes. Now that got my attention.
Now it’s serious…. I must do whatever it takes to get my weight under control!
Think about buying a home. In most cases, this is a need. You save up for a down payment. Perhaps you cut out going to restaurants; take your lunch to work instead of buying it everyday; keep repairing your old car versus buying a new one. You are committed to make the necessary changes and sacrifices in order to save enough money so you can get that new home. These efforts probably won’t even be hard because of the reward you will receive in the end.
So let’s talk about entrepreneurship. It is what you desire it to be. Is it just a desire or is it actually a need?
For me, it was both a desire and a need. I needed it for my sanity but I desired it for my freedom. I placed a very high priority on this goal and I was willing to sacrifice many other things in order to make it happen.
I gave up most of my free time and studied instead.
I cut out spending unnecessary money and used it to pay off other bills so I could leave my 9-5 debt-free.
I no longer watched mindless TV at night.
We took fewer vacations.
This was my mantra for two years. I knew if I held on for the long haul, I would be ok and achieve my goals in the end.
Sometimes, it became very difficult to continue on this journey. I got tired. I would have a bad day and feel discouraged. I felt like a hamster running in circles on the little wheel inside the cage.
I call this being on the spinning wheel of desire. Think about the hamster parallel. You give it all you got and keep running, faster and faster, but you’re not getting anywhere.
At some point, you have to do something to get off the wheel going nowhere. You have to make some changes that will put you on a different path.
Here’s how you do that:
Step out of your comfort zone
Learn from new mentors
Surround yourself with people in that space coaching program
Commit time and effort to your goal
Having a desire isn’t enough. It has to be turned into results through determination.
So ask yourself, how bad do you want something? Bad enough to get off the hamster wheel?
What are you willing to sacrifice to make your desire a reality?
Until you are ready to take a step forward and become unstoppable, your desire will never become a reality.
You will forever remain on this spinning wheel of desire until you place a high priority on your business dreams and goals and get serious about taking action.
So that’s a wrap for today!
Til next time…
