Holy Guacamole

Sometimes, we are our own worst enemies.

Welcome to Thursdays with Cyn where I share my personal thoughts to hopefully motivate and inspire you to take just one small step towards your OWN e-commerce entrepreneurial journey.

Today’s topic is: HOLY GUACAMOLE!

What in the world could guacamole have to do with an e-commerce business… well, a lot! So let’s jump right into it!

Growing up, I was a very picky eater. Honestly, it was so bad, I don’t know how I survived! I only liked a few things and ate them all the time. And it’s weird because some of the things I ate other people see as strange! Like chopped tomatoes on my hotdogs. Yum! I still eat my hotdogs that way to this day! But I hate ketchup on my hotdogs...

I never really liked vegetables - only tomatoes and green peppers. As an adult, I’ve come to love vegetables! There are very few that I don’t like.

One thing that I now absolutely love and eat almost every day is Guacamole! Part of that reason is due to a wonderful local Mexican restaurant that serves it. Also, I have friends that love it and serve it when we are invited over for dinner.

I didn’t always love guacamole… it’s really only been within the last 10 years that I started eating it.

I remember being at a friends house for an event years ago and she had fixed some homemade guacamole and was just ranting and raving over how great it was and just digging into it and just carrying on about how awesome it tasted. Everyone at the get-together was chowing down on this guacamole.

I took one look and said something to the effect of - that looks like something the cat barfed-up! YUK! And I wouldn’t even touch it. It looked disgusting.

So now I look back and think about how I felt about it then and how it is now one of my absolute favorite things.

And I realize all that time I wasted missing out on enjoying something so wonderful - simply by being so STUBBORN that I wouldn’t even taste it.

I made up my mind I didn’t like it without ever even trying it!

I was used to a lifetime of “picky eater” ways and I allowed myself to continue in that roll which stopped me from enjoying something so wonderful.

Sometimes, we are our own worst enemies.

We make decisions that affect us in a large way without truly considering the consequences.

Let’s take this scenario and apply it to something more serious - our businesses.

Consider this… are the decisions you are making as an entrepreneur fully thought out? Are you weighing the pros and cons and objectively analyzing how your decisions will impact your business?

Or… are you allowing your preconceived notions to guide you in your decision making with no regard for the true facts surrounding the issue?

I can honestly say making business decisions based on my personal judgement without fact-based analysis has gotten me into trouble in the past. I’ve made some bad business decisions and it has cost me precious time, lots of money, and a ton of frustration.

I can very clearly see the parallels between my “picky-eater” guacamole story and those bad business decisions.

We are creatures of habit. We apply the same principles and techniques of decision making practices regardless if it is about food or business.

And that’s not good.

I challenge you to examine your own history and see if you can find any correlation between how you make decisions in your personal life and your business opportunities. I bet you’ll find some similarities.

Every single time I put a bite of guacamole in my mouth… I am reminded of all those years I was so stubborn and wouldn’t even try it. And I think about all that time wasted that I could have been enjoying this wonderful food that I now dearly love.

That’s a great reminder to me to question WHY before making a decision about anything.

When presented with a decision that needs to be made, if I recognize I instantly have an opinion on the subject without conducting valid research to determine the answer, I ask myself WHY. Why do I feel this way?

That’s when I catch myself falling into those same, uneducated and potentially dangerous decision making pitfalls from the past.

Being able to recognize that incompetence in myself - and that is truly what it is - that allows me to stop, readjust my line of thinking, and avoid another mistake by using more appropriate research methods in order to come up with a fact-based conclusion versus allowing baseless, preconceived notions to control my decisions.

I hope this makes sense and that you can apply this scenario to your own life and that it helps you to make better decisions in your business.

So I want to hear from you...give me your thoughts on how you relate to today’s topic.
